Astrological Edge – February 2016
by Stephanie Shea
Overall, this month’s energies will have a stabilizing effect, though we will still be experiencing tension from the Uranus-Pluto square. Now that Mercury is direct, it may feel like the new year is finally getting underway.
While last month provided the opportunity to resolve past issues, this month is much more supportive of planning for the future and moving forward. With the Sun in the innovative sign Aquarius until the 19th, we will be encouraged to work with others and be open to new ideas. Community-mindedness will prevail to help us consider how our actions may affect others.
The transiting square between Uranus, the planet of revolution, and Pluto, the planet of structure and authority, has been presenting us with the imperative to stand up for ourselves on a global as well as personal level. This square first went into orb in May 2010, and it completed its final exact contact last spring. Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn will continue to square each other tightly this month, though by month’s end the tensions generated by this aspect will begin to ease, as Uranus moves further away from its square to the outermost planet.
The effects of this square can be noted in world events of recent years, including political uprisings in the Ukraine and Middle East, conflicts between police and civilians in the United States, and large-scale protests against socio-economic inequality, such as the Occupy Wall Street movement. Although the Uranus-Pluto square is beginning to separate, its energy will still be felt for the next couple of years. This month, the world may see a continuation of some of the volatile energies this square expressed via political protests and bold activism.
Likewise, on a personal level, we may continue to feel passion for social and political causes. The desire to change existing societal structures may have undergone a resurgence last month when Uranus moved within a degree of squaring Pluto. Those born April 7-8 or January 7-8 are likely to feel the strongest effects of the Uranus-Pluto square this month.
With Mars in Scorpio sextiling Pluto from the 1st to the 9th (exact on the 3rd), we’ll be especially supported astrologically in taking action that initiates positive change within existing governmental structures. The sextile is a favorable angle that can help people find an intelligent use for their energies. Globally, this can help to focus and organize activists and help them to be more effective in working within the system to forge strategic alliances with authority figures. Others may be motivated to rise to positions of authority and empowerment themselves.
Mars in Scorpio sextile Pluto in Capricorn will give us plenty of discipline to tackle and complete projects that may have seemed in the past “too big a mountain” to even contemplate. If there is a closet you have been intending to clean out or paperwork you have been wanting to organize, this is the time to do it.
You’ll also have the requisite self-discipline to break an addiction—smoking, drinking, and anything else that has sabotaged you in your quest to attain one of your dreams. This is the time to begin new, positive habits. You’ll have the calm, strong discipline to see aims through to successful completion even after the aspect passes. Your best approach will be to make a plan and stick to it
Mars, the planet representing anger, can be cooler and more calculating while in the deeply analytical sign Scorpio (January 3 to March 5, then again later this year). This Mars placement can temper some of the more impulsive energies coming from Uranus by promoting thoughtful, direct action and channeling feelings of anger into productive long-term plans for change.
The Mars-Pluto sextile can influence intimate relationships, business partnerships, and relationships with bosses, fathers, or anyone we consider an authority figure. Conflicts with those we see as more powerful than us can be handled with honesty and integrity at this time. These days are valuable for getting to the heart of matters and letting go of fear or anger rooted in the past.
It may not always feel comfortable to face some of these interpersonal issues, but the opportunity to feel more in charge of our decisions, actions, and personal power exists if we are willing to stick courageously to our values, even if that means risking disapproval from someone in authority. Stay focused on a practical plan for a constructive outcome and you will win!
All this month, Saturn in Sagittarius will trine Uranus in Aries, with the closest approach occurring between the 13th and 23rd. This should offer us the opportunity to stabilize our rebellious urges and translate them into practical solutions to underlying problems. This beneficial aspect will have a grounding effect that can help us to act on our idealism. Again, success at this time lies in formulating a practical, “how to get from Point A to Point B” plan and then moving forth and implementing it.
Religious zealotry can be tempered during this time, as people will be able to see the most productive way to live in alignment with their values. Globally, we could see spiritual leaders setting useful structures within their organizations to discourage violent or impulsive activity. An overall mood of global citizenship will begin to emerge, helping world leaders to create systems that can solve international problems.
Personally, this trine can help us all to come up with a practical plan of action for realizing some of the “crazy” ideas that mean a lot to us. There will be an emphasis on individuality and pursuing our passions. Saturn can offer support by helping us to commit to what we truly want.
Big-picture thinking will be emphasized, and we’ll have the ability to consider the time, energy, and resources that may be required to achieve our goals. There can be a realization that attaining what we want is going to take a lot of work, but we’ll simultaneously be getting inspired and excited. We can enjoy “getting real” about our dreams and mapping out a solid route to success. This is the time to get charged up about manifesting your goals, dreams, and ideals and to pair that passion with practical action steps and long-term commitment.
Venus will be in Capricorn through the 15th. This can offer support for committed relationships and emphasizes being valued for our work. On the 16th, Venus moves into Aquarius, shifting the focus to creativity, freedom, individuality, and friendship. Community-based projects are favored and may take on an artistic flair. Those involved in a romantic relationship would benefit from spending time separate from their partner in order to pursue personal interests and friendships.
The Sun moves into Pisces on the 19th, reminding us to slow down, to appreciate loved ones, and to make time for activities that help us experience inner peace. The remainder of the month will be ideal for pursuing creative endeavors, going on a spiritual retreat, connecting with loved ones, and having time just to daydream. With all the practical energies that are afoot this month, the Pisces Sun can help us to take a break from our busy lives and put aside time to nurture our spirit. Spending time in and around water may be especially healing and appealing.
Every month on the day of the New Moon, the energy in the atmosphere opens to receive new seeds. For centuries, farmers have used New Moon cycles for planting their crops. We can use this same potent energy for stating our dreams and goals and manifesting them. To use a New Moon power day, simply write down, by hand, a maximum of ten wishes or goals you would like to manifest in your life.
Because this month’s New Moon occurs in Aquarius, you may want to include wishes on your list concerning the following categories that are especially related to that sign: inventive solutions, future-minded thinking, humanitarian attitudes, humor, friendship, and avoiding excessive detachment.
- “I want to see life in a way that sparks my sense of humor”
- “I want to be aware of, and act with, good timing”
- “I want to be more objective in my perceptions regarding __________”
- “I want to easily gain the knowledge that willempower me to manifest my dream of _________”
- “I want to easily find myself participating in those activities that attract happy, healthy friendships”
- “I want to easily attract and begin happy friendships with people with whom I can share mutual interests, support, and caring”
- “I want to make lots of new friends”
- “I want the barriers that keep me from finding happy friendships totally lifted from me.”
This month’s New Moon occurs on the 8th at 9:40 A.M. E.S.T. The first eight hours, after the New Moon is exact are most powerful for wishing, but up to twenty-four hours later will still work.
